Historical Significance To Me

Image result for high heel jewelry boxSomething that is significant to me and my family is an old jewelry holder in the shape of a high heel, because it belonged to my Great Grandmother since she was a child and when she passed away it was passed along to my Grandma as an object to remember her by. The item is historically significant to me and my family because it is a symbol of love and remembrance from my great grandma, and although it may not mean anything to other people or not be significant to them, what makes it significant to my family is because it is one of the few objects we have to remember her, and it has been passed through generations. It is a family tradition I guess you could say, and has been there as a family heirloom for many many years to remember the previous generations.

What makes an object historically significant to someone can differ from person to person, it can be something as small as a little ring that has been passed down through the family or it could range to something like a car from a relative. Historical Significance can be very broad, as the Holocaust is historically significant to the whole world however the jewelry box from my great grandma is probably not significant what so ever outside of my family. To me, historical significance just means that in some way, an object or memory or anything from the past that you can remember or hold can impact you today with feelings of happiness, sadness, anger, or whatever emotion may be associated with that certain object.

  1. Thank you for sharing the jewellery box, Ethan.
I like how you mention that there are layers to events or things that have historical significance – some are significant to everyone and some are significant to just some or a few. It all depends on context and perspective doesn’t it? How old do you think the shoe is? What years do you think your grandmother would have owned this? The jewellery box represents something else as well….what time period is represented by the shoe? Think fashion.
