Canada 150

I think the most important battle in Canadian history is the Battle at Vimy Ridge. The battle at Vimy Ridge was one of the most successful battles of World War 1 and it was also the first time the four Canadian divisions fought together. On April 12th 15,000 Canadian infantry stormed the ridge and took over the German’s stronghold, something that over 100,000 French infantry failed to do. The attack on Vimy was the battle that brought Canada together and was ‘the birth of a nation’. The Canadian infantry had developed a new tactic that led them to victory, this was the first time a tactic other then “over the top” was used. The Canadians took two weeks straight to just bombard the Germans and make them restless from the explosions that invading would be easier since they were to tired to do anything properly, and with the divisions all having their own maps for the battle it made navigating the position effortless. In a matter of 3 days the Canadians managed to capture the stronghold a task that took the allies 3 years and STILL couldn’t manage to achieve victory. The allies lost several thousands of soldiers. This battle truly showed how strong Canada is as an independent nation and how no matter how impossible a task may seem, the proper strategy and execution can make all the difference.
