Vimy Ridge’s significance to the development Canada’s identity

The battle of Vimy Ridge was held on April 9th 1917, the battle was between  four divisions for the Canadian Corps, against three divisions for the German sixth army.  The battle of Vimy Ridge, I feel shaped Canada in a way especially because with Vimy Ridge being Canada’s first actual war to fight in, we showed how strong and able we were and still are as a country.  The Canadian soldiers went into the battle not knowing what to expect from the war, being their first time and they were very successful. Canada’s military achievements during the war raised our international stature and helped earn us a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles that formally ended the war. The accomplishments of the Canadian army earned Canada a spot in the Paris Peace Conference. Vimy Ridge was so important to Canada, that France actually ceded to Canada 250 acres of land where the Vimy Ridge memorial is, so that Canada would have something to remind them of what happened there. “Vimy as an event cost thousands of Canadian lives and wounded 7,000” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/battle-of-vimy-ridge-first-world-war/article34515113/

“The gleaming white marble and haunting sculptures of the Vimy Memorial, unveiled in 1936, stand as a terrible and poignant reminder of the 11,285 Canadian soldiers killed in France who have no known graves.” http://www.warmuseum.ca/the-battle-of-vimy-ridge \
