Canadian Identity Collage

In the left of the Canadian flag is my mother’s side and on the right is my father’s. In the centre I put the Canadian flag as if they are all joined together but “one.” Kind of like in Christianity and Catholicism the Holy Trinity is three beings seen as one – “unity.”

The Canadian figures that are there I put because they signify Canada’s citizen’s place and impact in society. Them being Terry Fox (For his dedication and contribution to cancer research, Deadmau5 (for his popularity in the music industry), Michael J. Fox (A well known Canadian actor after the starring in the Back to the Future series), Jim Carrey (Possibly one of the most famous Canadian entertainers), Michael Cera (Him being a popular actor since starring in the Scott Pilgrim V.S. the World), and Ryan Reynolds ( Him being a famous Canadian actor and comedian, especially since Deadpool released and his portrayal of him in it and X-Men: Origins).

In the centre column I included the various ways to say “Hello” represent how Canada is multi-lingual. I had “Eh?” and “Aboot” there because of the stereotype of Canadians always saying them. I had “Democracy” there just to show that we as a country are democratic. “Monopoly Money” being another stereotype I decided to include it, along with a bottle of maple syrup. The scale and equals symbol in the centre represent justice, balance, and the equality that we have here in Canada. The peacekeeper helmet is important to us as a nation as it is the largest thing I feel Canada has done for the world-creating the U.N Peacekeepers. The hockey stick is to represent our passion for the sport and it being our national sport as well. Beavers are our national animal so, my poorly drawn one was to show that. A ‘+’ symbol signifies our universal healthcare. Education is important as we as a country offer so much and have so many opportunities to pursue it. An inukshuk was put there as it represents our First Nations and Inuit citizens. “Sorry” is another stereotype I had to include as apparently the Canadian people are always apologizing. I put “Multi-cultural” in quotes on the page as it states that we as a country are multi-cultural.

Newfoundland

The flag of Newfoundland and Labrador was drawn to show my mother’s side of the family (her being from Newfoundland).

I put “‘ow she cuttin’ dere bye?” and ‘Whatta ya at?” (meaning “How are you?” and “What are you doing?” in “Newfie English”) because it just shows some of Newfoundland people and how they talk- I feel it shows how different even a place in our own country can be so different. ‘-30C’ was put there because it just shows how cold Newfoundland always is. The drawing of the iceberg was put there as Newfoundland is known for having icebergs. Fish was there as Newfoundland is also known for having lots of fish. I put Fish ‘N’ Chips there as it is an extremely popular meal in Newfoundland.

Ireland / Germany

The flags of Ireland and Germany were drawn to show my father’s side of the family.

There I put various Irish and German symbols and stereotypes like the Celtic Cross and Celtic Knot to show the religious part of Ireland and just as a symbol, and a glass to kind of ride on the stereotype that the Irish are a bunch of drunken people. On the German side of things I decided to have the glass for that too and a string of sausages as a stereotype.

This is my Canadian Identity.
