Determining Significance: Who Am I?

Describing my artifact

The artifact I haven chosen to share with the class today is an old war photo of my great granddad, who fought in world war two, on the Juno beach against the German forces. He won Five medals during his time of serving in the war. He even watched his best friend die in front of him, which is absolutely heartbreaking in his case. My family decided to keep the medals because they hold a special place in our family heritage, and it’s always amazing to know one of my ancestors was a soldier in the war of the Allies v.s the Axis Powers.

Is it relevant to today?

I think the medals are not relative to anyone but my family and I today. Others may not care about the medals and how my great granddad went to war, but the proof of his heroic and courageous soul means a lot to my Nan. My great grandad was my Nan’s dad, and I know when he was still alive, my grandma looked up to him very dearly. He was her best friend growing up.

What if someone were to find the artifact 500 years from now?

If someone were to find this little photo of my granddad and his medals 500 years from now, They would be able to figure out that he was a hero from one of the many possible wars that could take place in the future. I’m not exactly sure what the medals mean because they are very old, dusty and hard to read, but i’m sure they have a huge historical connection to them.

My artifact is important because…

My artifact is very important to me because it means that one of my ancestors was a wartime hero back in world war 2. That means that he was brave and strong enough to survive the war, and that he lived to tell on the tales of his battles and struggles. His medals show that he was heroic and brave. They show that he survived the war, and helped beat the Axis powers in the brutal battlefields that ravaged the European soils in WWII.

Bonus:

My granddad was one of the few soldiers who survived the bombardment on Juno beach. He lost his best friend to a German shell, and barely made it out alive himself! There is many more stories I could tell about my Granddad, but I have to keep a few to myself!
