Japanese Bombing Justification

I believe that the United States was justified for the dropping of the atomic bombs on the two Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki, although I do not necessarily agree with this decision, or think it was necessary for them to do so, the United States was in total right to do so. First of all the Japanese not only were aligned with Nazi Germany in the second world war, which alone would arguably be enough reason for the United States to retaliate against them in some way. Japan was proving to be a very serious threat to the United States and its citizens, the Japanese held many American prisoners of war within the country and treated them atrociously, including starving and torturing them. Japan initiated the first major act of war against America in the second world war, who was trying to avoid conflict at the time and even refused to back down when Americans came to fend off the Japanese invaders. The United States also wanted to prove a point to the rest of the world that they are not a country to be reckoned with and used the bombing as proving dominance. After being idle and passive during a long war the United States seemed weaker and more neutral then once thought by other countries, Japan proved this to them by attempting to take them on, and ultimately suffered consequences, showing the rest of the world that they are still just as powerful as ever. Without proving this, if another war started United States could be thought of as a potentially easy target, seeming as if they had resources to fight the war why wouldn’t they do so. Another reason why the bomb was justified is because without stopping the Japanese before a second attack, the United States and Japan could have had an on foot war, which would ultimately end in American soldiers being killed as well as Japanese, and under the impression that the war would not be completely one sided more Japanese would likely be killed by an on foot war against United States then the bombs themselves. Lastly the United States had spent approximately $200 million of tax dollars on these atomic bombs and did not want the bomb to be wasted and along with the rest of these factors listed it just felt like the right time to drop the two bombs. In conclusion the United States had the right to drop the bombs, and regardless of whether they needed drop them or not, Japan had it coming, at least in my opinion.

Extension:

Canada played a large part in the creation of the two atomic bombs, they harvested and then gave the United States many resources such as plutonium and uranium, which are both very radioactive and main ingredients in the bombs. Canada also provided an environment safe from any warfare for the bombs to be developed, and even helped to developed them. The aboriginals Sahtugot’ine community also got hired to transport these radioactive elements which had dramatic long term effects on them and their bodies. Although I do not believe Canada is innocent in the war and have had its share of awful choices such as the Japanese internments, I do not think we should be held accountable for the bombings of Japan. First of all the United States have been a huge ally to Canada forever and asked us to help them. If a situation occurred where we would be getting invaded the United States would probably use the bomb in our protection as they spend much of their own military and resources protecting us already, so we owed them to help In this production. We also did not know when making the bombs that they would be used in Japan, as pearl harbour hadn’t happened at that point. I think we should be held accountable for the radiation of the Sahtgot’ine aboriginal tribe, but that is a different issue then the dropping of the bombs themselves.
