How did Canada contribute to the cold war?

Canadians are not mentioned much in the cold war that took place from the 1950’s to the 1980’s, but we weren’t completely “useless” in the high-tension war, that could have lead to an all out nuclear fallout between the biggest powers in the world at the time, America and the Soviet Union (USSR/Russian Federation).

Canada was actually rather helpful in these threatening times. We served for America in the fight against communism. In September, 1945 a Russian, named Igor Gouzenko,  who was staying in Canada at the time stole highly important documents from the Russia, stating that they had Russian spies hiding within Canada, America and Great Britain, stealing information from the three countries.

Canada also contributed in the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, (NATO for short) which is an intergovernmental military alliance between several north American and European states to protect from any attacks on those countries.

Canadians also fought against the idea of a nuclear war, they tried hard to get other countries to feel the same, but both powers, Russia and America agreed that if one country fired, they would annihilate each other. Though the threat of Nuclear war rose, Canada stood strong with America, helping them to fight along side of South Korea against the Communist North Korea.

Though Canada didn’t play a huge role as America and Russia did, we still helped out neighboring country in their tough times, proving Canadian is loyal to their allies and that we will be there to back them up in any conflict. Even in the midst of nuclear warfare.
