Canada had an extremely crucial role in the development in the first atomic bomb, because without Canada it would have either taken longer to create or simply wouldn’t have existed. Several years before the 1930s research for nuclear capabilities was already underway. There was a secret race between the Nazis and the “Manhattan project” to see who could create the atomic bomb first. To succeed the Manhattan project would need Canada’s help. Canadian scientists provided a key ingredient to the bomb, uranium, (the only uranium refinery left was the Elrorado refinery in port hope, Ontario. Also, most of the uranium came from the shores of Great Bear Lake in the North West Territories.) The Canadian scientists discovery of uranium 235 helped to create a chain reaction, they also discovered how to purify uranium 235. Many view Canada’s involvement in this creation as a “major technological advancement”, but there were also many who thought differently. What Canada had not been informed of throughout this process of creating the bomb was what it would be used for. When the bomb hit Hiroshima ten, Nagasaki, Canada’s major involvement in the act would be view as cruel and maybe even unjustified. However, in august 1998, the remaining scientist apologized to the survivors of the attack and for unknowingly taking place in the horrific and gruesome attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki who in fact are still suffering from the repercussions of the bomb today.
