During the letter writing assignment, we learned how different groups of people can view things in different ways. An example of this is how women with husbands at war and women with husbands at home would feel different about voting for conscription. When the government allowed women to vote on conscription they specifically asked women who had family at war, because they were most likely to vote in favour of it, because the more soldiers sent to war the higher chance of their loved ones coming back alive. As women without loved ones serving won’t have that emotional bias in voting to support conscription. Another difference between conscription is the race based opinions of the English and the French Canadians. The majority of English Canadians was for conscription as the conscription helped support Britain, which they were honoured to do because of their strong dedication to Britain. The French Canadians had no real affection to Britain and did not want to be forced into a war to support them just because the English Canadians did have that connection, they though this was unfair to them and the English just thought of it as helping an ally in need of it. The conscription was a large ordeal during the First World War and caused a lot of conflict between voters for, and against conscription due to its delicate manner, if the conscription fails, our troops have a lower rate of survival and reinforcements, and if it passes, innocent people will be forced to fight and potentially die in a war. Regardless of the outcome people will die, making the citizens very passionate toward fighting for their stance on the issue.
